This is a full service, independent grocer/supermarket with support neighborhood retail that serves as a revitalizing catalyst to a primarily Latino main street district. Formerly two separate parcels of land divided by a public road, the urban design solution was developed in conjuction with the city planning department. As a result, a portion of the road was closed, generating a pedestrian-friendly environment and reducing the traffic circulation and "short cuts" through the neighborhood area. The design addresses a modernist interpretation of industrial aesthetics with the free-standing steel framework and concrete tilt-up walls, accented with bright plaster colored walls. The exteriors were not the only influence, as the interiors were also addressed with the same freshness of approach to the industrial playfulness in the colors, graphics and displays. Each department was designed to be identified with large graphics, neon signage and oversized product sculptures, creating a lively shopping experience.
