Uptown Apartments Oakland, CA

Client: Forest City Residential DevelopmentContractor: James E. Roberts Obayashi CorporationCompletion Date: June, 2008

The Uptown Apartments is a true urban renewal project incorporating a mix of retail/commercial, entertainment and residential uses. The project includes 60,000 sq.ft. of retail/commercial space, 1,200 mixed-income apartments, 400 off-campus graduate student housing units for U.C. Berkeley, and 900 condominiums.

The low-rise rental units, urban loft-style apartments attracting young urban professionals to the site, are located between 21st and 18th Streets, with ambling paseos linking the lofts and residential towers to the vibrant entertainment district.

The new high-rise towers along Telegraph are for-sale residential units, with lobbies and retail activities on street level. Additional lofts will be created by renovating the existing buildings, thereby maintaining the historical significance of the overall site.

The overall redevelopment project exemplifies what can be achieved by turning older, under-utilized parking lots into a bustling urban community bringing people back downtown while revitalizing the existing BART Transit. In addition, the Uptown Apartments are the City of Oakland first LEED Silver certified multi-family residential project.
