This new corporate headquarters involved inserting a twolevel administrative office complex within the confines of an existing warehouse structure. As part of a large distribution center for the chain of Superior Super Warehouse grocery stores, the administrative complex was planned as a focalpoint to enhance productivity and efficiency. A new secondary structural system was designed to support the administrative offices within the shell of the existing warehouse. This structure floats free from the warehouse and allows the two components to move separately in the event of an earthquake. All building systems and services were developed to support this adaptive re-use. The administrative facility is home to more than 200 employees located on two floors, with a smaller satellite office on the ground floor of the distribution center.
The main lobby takes advantage of the existing volume of the warehouse with a 25 sq.ft. tall ceiling featuring skylights. Central circulation spines open onto the space, providing access to buyers’ offices and open office work areas. Circulation zones are colored in warm tones and serve as galleries, displaying photographs of existing stores and products. Open office areas and private offices feature a cooler color palette with visual markers highlighting different departments. Large multipurpose rooms serve as hubs for office activities such as training and team meetings to luncheons and office gatherings.
