Hawaii Regional Housing Honolulu, HI

Client: A & B Fluor Ohana Communities, LLCStatus: Design

Located on several separate sites east of Honolulu and overlooking Pearl Harbor, this proposal for the Department of the Navy's Hawaii Regional Housing consists of over 900 new/ replacement homes and more than 900 renovated homes for junior enlisted to senior officers. Neighborhoods are combined into walkable communities that respect the natural topography and take advantage of the surrounding views.

MVE drew upon its local Hawaiian housing experience to create plans for the new homes that will reflect the most current approaches in market-rate residential design found in the private sector. The elevation styles draw upon the locally prevalent Craftsman homes of the Manoa area, Hawaiian Island Mediterranean examples and the uniquely Historic Hawaiian architecture of architect Charles W. Dickey.

New/replacement housing types consist of duplex to six-plex townhomes for junior enlisted, duplex townhomes for senior enlisted personnel and single-family detached homes for senior officers. Also included in the project are designs for community centers and clubhouse facilities. The plans feature enclosed two-car garages, island kitchens, tech centers and open plan layouts that take advantage of cross ventilation provided by Hawaii's trade winds. Front lanais highlight entries from the street and rear lanais expand the interior family space to the outdoor rear yards.
