The challenge in designing for the new headquarters of the Orange County Coucil of the Boy Scouts of America, was to create a meaningful and memorable environment that was reflective of the values and history of the Boy Scouts, while remaining mindful of today's youth and a modest construction budget. The design solution was to create a space that visually expressed the resourcefulness and ingenuity that is at the heart of Scouting. Simple, common building materials were assembled in a creative manner with expressed connections and detailing. Many materials typically found at the local builder's supply store, including fluted plastic, zinc coated metal and plywood were assembled in a new and unique manner for both interior construction and custom designed furnishings throughout. Our goal was to create a resourceful, engaging assembly of materials that would be worthy of a Boy Scout's merit badge.
Color and graphic design also played a major role in defining the look of the project. A bold color scheme derived from traditional tones found in Scouting uniforms was employed throughout the space, while a custom designed graphics program, created by our in-house graphic design team, created a design statement that was harmonious with the interiors. This program incorporated directional signage, donor plaques, honor walls and vintage photographs. A new Heritage Center features graphic displays that celebrate not only the history of the Scouts, but contemporary honors and achievements, while a 45-foot custom designed mural depicts the famous Boy Scout motto.
